We are passionate about Hebrew ‒ the Holy Language of the Bible ‒ which has been successfully revived into a vibrant, living language in one of the most remarkable success stories of modern times. Today, as the official language of the State of Israel, Hebrew is spoken by more than ten million people worldwide, and its use continues to grow as more people connect with its rich history, cultural significance and modern-day relevance.
At Sydney Hebrew Ulpan, we are proud to take part in this continuous growth. Our team of dedicated, native-speaking Hebrew teachers were born and raised in Israel and are highly experienced in language education. Each teacher is extensively trained in the Ulpan teaching method and participates in ongoing professional development to stay at the forefront of the most advanced, research-based teaching practices. By sharing their expertise and enthusiasm with students and using creative and effective techniques, our teachers create a learning environment that is both enriching and enjoyable.
Guiding and inspiring this work is the Ulpan’s director, Shelly Triffon, who holds a Master of Applied Linguistics (with excellence) from the University of New South Wales. Shelly’s academic research ‒ the first of its kind ‒ has focused on the preservation of Hebrew in Australia. In addition to teaching Hebrew at Sydney Hebrew Ulpan and the University of Sydney, she is engaged in teacher training and curriculum development, contributing to the vitality and future of Hebrew language education in Australia.
OUR PROGRAMS
ADULT ULPAN PROGRAM
Our Adult Ulpan program focuses on conversational Modern Hebrew and develops proficiency in all core language skills, including speaking, listening, reading and writing.
It is suitable for adults learning Hebrew as a second language, ranging from total beginners with no previous background, to advanced speakers who wish to improve their vocabulary and grammar.
The core materials used in this program were developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and are taught in Ulpan classes in Israel and around the world. Alongside these, students benefit from culture-related materials, audio-visual programs and specialised online practice tools — uniquely crafted by our Ulpan to enhance and maximise language acquisition.
CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
– Hebrew as a First Language: this program is suitable for children who speak Hebrew at home or with their family, and wish to acquire literacy skills and improve their vocabulary. Levels range from beginners to advanced.
– Hebrew as a Second Language: this program is suitable for children who do not speak Hebrew, or who speak minimal Hebrew. It is a designated Ulpan program for children, which covers all aspects of the language.
Both programs include a specialised, interactive practice tool — accessible via smartphone, tablet, or web browser — enabling students to practise what they’ve learned and condolidate their knowledge anytime, anywhere.
CLASSICAL HEBREW PROGRAM
Our Classical Hebrew program is designed for learners seeking to engage with traditional texts in their original language — whether reading the Siddur, studying the Bible, or going through a Jewish conversion process.
In this program, learners gain a thorough understanding of the Hebrew writing system, alongside key grammatical concepts — equipping them with the tools to read and understand classical Hebrew texts with greater confidence and depth.
